"Fire is as natural as sunshine, rain and fresh air.”

In June 2002, the world’s eyes were fixed on northern Arizona as the ravenous Rodeo-Chediski
Fire ripped through forests, threatened homes and lives, and bore down on the typically
tranquil town of Show Low.
As the United States Forest Service Lead Public Information Officer for the operation,
Jim Paxon became the straight-talking face and voice of the
battle with that powerful fire. Many times each day, he stood before reporters,
evacuees and virtually the world to provide information and insight into the firefight,
and to create understanding of the fire itself.
While Jim spent more than 30 years battling fire, he does not view fire as an enemy.
His intention is to create a better understanding of fire as a necessity in the
natural order. Jim’s goal is to teach people to live harmoniously in the forests
and woodlands where Mother Nature uses fire to maintain the forests. In talking
about fire, Jim stresses that we can accomplish much the same management without
fire by cutting and cleaning; however, Mother Nature still intends to have fire
visit every acre periodically.
Jim’s new book, “The Monster Reared His Ugly Head”
gives Jim’s simple-spoken insider’s account of the Rodeo-Chediski Fire. It also
provides insights into the natural necessity and eventuality of fire and its vital
role in the life of our wildlands.
Now retired from the Forest Service, Jim shares his knowledge and passion with residents,
businesses and governments of forest communities. His services
are vital to saving communities, homes, forests and lives.
